FUNCTION: breaks down food to be used by the body.

  Goes into blood to get all over the body.

4 STEPS: INGESTION, DIGESTIION, ABSORPTION & ELIMINATION

  Mechanical- bite chew; break down food itself

    Chemical- different chemical make-up


PARTS:

MOUNTH- Mechanical digestion- Saliva juices help with the teeth to crush

and grind.

Chemical digestion- enzymes (protiens- speed things up)

break down foods (ie: crackers turn into sugar)


ESOPHAGUS- muscular tube from mouth to stomach 

      has mucus which helps food down

STOMACH- expands to hold food

        j shaped

    3 layers of muscles to churn to do most of the 

  mechanical digestion.

    chemical- break down of proteins into amino acids


INTESTINES-

Smalll- where most of the chemical digestion takes place.

    Absorption of nutrients into the body. 6 meters long.

Large- excess water is absorbed into blood. 1&1/2 meters long.


RECTUM- waste is compressed and wait to leave thee body.


ANUS- where the waste leaves the body.


OTHER CONTRIBUTORS:

  LIVER- poduces bile that’s than stored in the

  GALLBLADDER to help break down enzymes even

  smaller within the small intestines.


NUTRITION:

Carbohydrates: 60% diet. 1st source of energy. grains, pastas

Protein: 30% diet. Growth & repair. Meats, nuts.

Fats: 10% diet. 2nd source of energy. Oils, butter.
