CLASS NOTES:







Function: Collect sound from surrounding area to channel and convert into electrical impulses for the brain to interpret.

* A sensory organ.           

* Hearing is response to sound waves.

* Part of the Nervous system.


Parts:

OUTER EAR:  Funnel

-gathers sound waves and funnels into the middle ear.


MIDDLE EAR:  Eardrum-entrance of the middle ear.

vibrates due to sound then sets off

vibration to occur with three middle ear

bones.

      3 bones: Hammer, Anvil & Stirrup

vibrations make each vibrate and set off the 

next. Named by their shapes.

    Connected to nose by Eustachian tube.  


INNER EAR:  COCHLEA

-vibrations create waves/tappings for the neurons to bring

info to the brain to interpret.

-snail tube shaped. fluid-filled to respond to sound waves.


SEMICIRCULAR CANALS- loops above the cochlea to help with balance. Fluid-filled that reacts to movement and send info to the brain to interpret and adapt . -Adjustment to position of the head.


*STRUCTURED TO RECEIVE VIBRATIONS TO HEAR.    (CSS 5g)


SOUND: Produced by pushes of air. Waves sent away from source of sound (ripple effect).

Travels through gases (air), liquid, and solids.  (MATTER-8)


Doppler Effect- pitch of sound changes with distance.

When moves to you=pulses faster and pitch higher.

When moves away from you= pulses slower and pitch lower.

*Used for sound effects of LightSaber in Star Wars Movies.
