  BASIC TERMS: GRADE 8

Qualitative: observations that are not measureable.

based on personal opinion.

ie: distinguishing characteristics; eye color

Quantitative: observations that are measureable.

based on numbers.

ie: specific measurement; 2 eyes

Parameters: one set of measureable factors.

define a system.

constant factor unless varied in an experiment.

ie: size, number, amount, degree

Constant: part that stays the same within the testing.

Variable: what can be varied, usually in a test.

not remaining the same/uniform as the rest.

deviate from the established type.

usually one at a time during testing.

ie: size, number, amount, degree

Dependant Variable: varied results after test completed.

Independent Variable: varied specific part during test.

Measurement: way of finding size, quantity or amount of

something to guage.  act or fact of measuring.

Testing: examination or trial. process used in an examination.

Weight: measurement of force ofgravity upon an object.

Matter: anything that takes up space and has mass.

Mass: amount of matter an object contains.

Volume: amount of space something takes up.

Density: amount of mass per volume. 

Same size can have diff. mass.
