Measurement notes

Matter- anything that can take up space.

                  Can change properties; solid, liquid, gas.

                  water is the only substance that forms naturally in all three states.

                  Light and heat are not matter- takes no space.

Mass- Masures quantity of matter in an object.

                  Mesured by kilograms.

 Volume- Space that matter occupies.                        Length x Height x Weight

 Motion- Distance moved from original point.

                  Distance from relative position.

 Momentum- Quantity of motiion.                                            Mass x Velocity

 Speed- Rate of change of position.  Amount of distance in time. Distance/ Time

 Velocity- Rate of change in position.

                  Rate of change of displacement.

                 Acceleration- Rate of change of velocity.   Change in motion                                                   V2 - V1 / Time

 Inertia- An objects resistance to change  in motion.

                  Objects like to stay at rest or motion.

                  How easy/hard to change an object’s motion.

 Energy- ability to do work or cause change.

                  Can transfer but not diminish.

                  Kinetic Energy- energy in motion.

                  Potential Energy- energy in position.

                  Gravitational P.E.- gravity upon                                                                             GPE= 9.8 m/s2

 Force- push or pull upon an object. transfering energy to the object to work or change.

 

 FORCE  (CSS 2): A push or pull on an object. Giving the object energy to work or change.

            *types: gravity, electromagnetic, nuclear, air pressure, thrust, normal,drag                         + others

            *2 components: 1) magnitude/strength 2) direction

            *formula: f=m*a   force equals mass times acceleration         a=f/m    m=f/a

            *measurement: Newton (N)- 1kg/m/s/s

 Energy: ability to do work or cause change.

 Work: (physical work) when force makes something move.  application of force.

  *Balanced Forces: two or more forces that cancel each other out.

                        Does not cause change of object’s motion.  Net force is zero.

 *Unbalanced Forces: two or more forces that are not equal.

                         Causes the object to accelerate.  Net force is not zero.

 *Net Force: sum of forces upon an object (what’s left).

                        -Vectors: arrow to show force and amount of force upon object by                                                 Newton’s

 Friction: A force that slows motion, or prevent motion.

                        An unbalanced force.

                        A rubbing between two surfaces creating a resistance to the object in                         motion.

            Types of Friction: static,  sliding,  rolling, air resistance
